elites....

I realise that the ripples of the wee shu min incident is still felt... elitism is a problem and its occurence may be due to meritocracy... well... meritocracy will definitely breed elites... i mean... isnt that what meritocracy is for?? right?? to reward the deserving through their merits... ... it may be unforgiving... but we have got to admit that its a fair deal... meritocracy is a major part of singapore and we uphold it with pride... and we should continue to do so... however, in the recent spat of society's enlightenment of the existence of elitism amongst rafflesians... we end up worrying about the future of our society that we forget another (sometimes dreaded) part of our singaporean society... and that is ... ... ... national service!!!... haha... sianz... i know...

wee shu min may not need to go through ns.... but one day, chances are that her bf or husband will have experienced ns... : where the rich and poor come together to shave their heads and kena tekan... both would have ran, touched that tree and came back... both rich and poor, elite and commoner, would have gone through similar experiences and are forced to work together throughout their army days... in the end, the ns experience may either be positive or negative... but in both cases... it opens up your world to those of others, who you will not have known if it wasnt for ns... you will understand each other a whole lot better... and yes it works both ways... she may/need not go through ns... but the boys will no doubt influence her and her sense of elitism...

therefore, i will not be too worried about meritocracy breeding elitism... because national service nullifies that... give shu min and her peers some time... 2 years to be exact... and probably, we will realise that we dont really have a problem of elitism afterall...
in the mean time, we could look at improving social awareness through education to diminish the development of elitism... things like social work, community service and student exchanges could work too...

i am beginning to feel that this post feels like a lab report... with a discussion, conclusion and recommendations... haha... especially the recommendations part... hahaha...
anyway,
cheers.
